ANYWHO. I have some musings about Chizuru. If you don’t know who she is, look up a Hakuouki wiki or something. Or better yet, read bareri-san or ochimizu posts. They know all. 

Prepare for word vomit, guys!

This probably isn’t an original thought, but I realized this when playing the game for the fifth fucking time for Hijikata’s route. In Hakuouki Shinsengumi Kitan, you essentially get 6 different Chizurus (six if you include Kazama). I say this because in each route as you are forced to make decisions on how you’ll/Chizuru will react to situations, and more of her personality is revealed, she is a different person in each play through. I’m speaking on personality and “What Would Chizuru Do” aspects only. If you took all of the Chizurus and lined them up side by side, and they were just standing there, I would expect them to all be doing different things, wearing different expressions, some fidgeting, some observing the situation, etc.

Let me solidify these thoughts a bit more. I can’t speak on Kazama since I haven’t played his route, so I’ll just cover the ones I have played.

Heisuke’s Chizuru -> This Chizuru struck me as a young, naive girl, but not an immature one. Heisuke seemed to be her closest friend in this route before becoming her lover later on. Chizuru plays a supportive role in all of her routes, but this one seemed the most emotionally supportive. She openly expressed her concern for Heisuke when he joined the Guardians, and went out of her way to convince him to return to the Shinsengumi. 
Saito’s Chizuru -> Probably the most mature version of Chizuru. She seemed more subdued (NOT submissive) around Saito, perhaps matching his own quiet nature. There was warmth there, but it was tempered by restraint, as she didn’t want to push her feelings on Saito. I believe Saito was encouraged to open up to her because of this restraint.
Sano’s Chizuru -> I’ll be honest, this was my least favorite version of Chizuru. That aside, this Chizuru was the one who possessed the most self-loathing and internal strife. Sano was the one who saved Chizuru in this route, not the other way around as in the others. This Chizuru doubted her self completely, but Sano was the one who convinced her that love (and babies) between a demon and human could be possible. 
Souji’s Chizuru -> Uhhh, again, honestly I can’t remember this Chizuru as well as the others, lol. I *think* I remember her being concerned for Souji’s well being. I suppose this Chizuru embodies the care-giver. She wanted Souji to be cautious due to his health, but at the same time, sympathized that his warrior nature wouldn’t allow him to remain on the side lines. 
Hijikata’s Chizuru -> probably the truest form of who Chizuru was intended to be in the game, since this is the “main” story line. She’s desperate to make herself useful to the men who took her in, and takes her role as Hijikata’s page seriously. Later on, as she’s come to know Hijikata better, she matches his stubbornness and seems to be the most headstrong of the different Chizurus.

So that’s my analysis. There is a lot of hate for Chizuru, but keep in mind that there are many different Chizurus. They are each shaped differently by their circumstances and the men they become closer to in each route. Her outward appearance never changes, but inside she is a totally unique person in each route. Physical strength isn’t the only thing that makes a person strong. ;)
